ok, I looked it up.

First, I am sorry, it is indeed us in Germany, who still use the term Indogerman, while the English and French speaking science prefers Indoeuropean.
In 1810 it was a French, who coined that Indogerman term and the dominance of German science in the field of ancient (and older) history until World War 2 caused the term to stay, until the more political correct term Indoeuropean came up. And yes, it is just that: more political correct. From the scientific point of view, both are rather suboptimum.

Second, the Indoiranian is most probably a major branch of the Indogerman. Philologists trace them back to the Caucasus as Rez said and link them directly to the Indogermans.

The question of the origin of the Indogermans is still disputet, btw.

To throw in my two bits I would say that it is not true that the origin of these peoples is unknown- the tracing of languages is a very pertinent tool to tracing these origins, and further than that all sorts of genetic mitochondrial tracing studies are being done all over the world to trace the migrations of people. To use the term Indo-Germanic however is highly questionable I agree; Indo-Iranian is more prevalent to this discussion, as Indo-European is a family branch far too general and ancient - one of perhaps as much as 100,000 yrs ago.
