I REALLY like this mod for custom battles. It so happens that to begin with the Persians are my second favorite nationality after the Assyrians for wargaming purposes and it is a fine thing indeed to get them into a custom battle in full battle array. My library includes Olmstead's History of the Persian Empire which is one of my favorite books here even though it is not in hardback. I edited the Persian unit data in the appropriate places in the appropriate files to make all uniquely Persian units into super units. In particular the units with missile capability are capable of killing a lot of people at considerable distances. I know the Rome TW combat system heavily favors fire combat as the way to win battles so this got a lot of my attention. Meanwhile I wish I could say as much in favor of the campaign but my idea of what I want from it is too much at variance with the historical realities of those times for me to have the same appreciation of the campaign scenario as for the custom battles option. As I say this I realize fully well how the Persians must have been limited in their ability to grind out combat units during this early period of growth but I think of the Achaemenid Persian armies in terms of big numbers such as were reported by Herodotus even if those numbers were greatly inflated. I think it is not too much fun in the game to have combat unit production be funneled through only one or two cities. I guess, however, that in time I will relent and try out the campaign scenario. These Persians just look too good. Some day first, however, I must get back to and finish the other two TW saved campaigns I have had on hold for months now.
